MBLC 8-week course
The 8-week course that I teach is the Mindfulness Based Living Course (MBLC). Participants are taught progressive skills in mindfulness through guided practice, inquiry and smaller group sessions. A strong emphasis is placed on experiential learning - there are home practices between sessions which include regular mindfulness practice and daily life exercises
The MBLC consists of eight classes, each lasting approximately two hours, held once a week. It begins with an introductory class before the eight-week course and ends with a follow-up class after the course concludes. Additionally, a day of mindfulness practice is usually included between the sixth and seventh weeks.
In the beginning, we often find that our attention is like a butterfly, flitting from one thought to another. So, we start by slowing down and settling our minds by gently regulating our breathing. We then introduce practices that ground us, allowing our attention to drop out of our heads and into the sensory awareness of the body. We then learn to rest in the present moment, getting used to disengaging from our habits of compulsive thinking and doing. Then, when we notice our attention drifting away into thinking, we learn to work with a mindfulness support or anchor to gently guide our focus back to the present moment.
The weekly themes are:
Introductory Session – What is Mindfulness and Why Practice It?
Week 1 – Start Where We Are
Week 2 – The Body as a Place to Stay Present
Week 3 – Introducing Mindfulness Support
Week 4 – Working with Distraction
Week 5 – Exploring the Undercurrent
Week 6 – Attitude of the Observer•Day of Practice
Week 7 – Self-acceptance
Week 8 – A Mindfulness-Based Life
Follow Up – The Rest of Your Life
